Nossa Senhora da Luz Mother Church

It is estimated that the Nossa Senhora da Luz (Our Lady of Light) Mother Church, in the village of Ponta do Sol, was built in the late 15th century. This is a neo-mannerist and manueline church with a longitudinal plan and single nave.
In 1708, the façade was reconstructed in order to extend the mother church's main building, by adding a mannerist portal.
This church has a collection of precious religious implements in silver. Worth special mention is the beautiful Hispano-Arabic style chancel ceiling and the green ceramic baptismal font, which is, some say, unique in the country. Of Mudejár design, the latter probably originated in the Spanish city of Seville, perhaps offered by King D. Manuel.
